Wow, it sure was a shaky week last week. First, earthquakes off the coast at East Cape, and then an earthquake in the Kermadec Trench! All of the earth's movement has definitely given R-CET scientists a few sleepless nights. Did you want Kiri Allen's press conference about the potential for a tsunami to reach Aotearoa's shores? Our principal investigator (aka R-CET's chief scientist) Dr Bill Fry shared the stage with her!
The tsunami evacuations sounded like they went relatively smoothly, and fortunately, there wasn't a huge wave that came onshore. Now, we have some lessons learned and know what to implement for future tsunami.
Check out this animation created by R-CET scientists and collaborators showing how the water was jolted by the earthquake and then how the waves expanded out across the Pacific from there!
