R-CET at Polyfest

We had so much fun last week in the Massey University sponsor tent for the Tongan stage at Polyfest!

In case you didn't get a chance to stop by, let's start with a little background. Each year, Massey University sponsors the Tongan stage at Polyfest. This year, they wanted to do things a little differently and feature information about the university in addition to information about some of the natural hazards that regularly occur in Tonga. Thus, Navigate in Unity Pacific Approaches to Community-Humanitarians (NIUPATCH) got in touch and asked if we could come present with them.

We joined QuakeCORE and DEtermining VOlcanic Risk in Auckland to present some earthquake, volcano, and tsunami outreach demos. It was a lot of fun to talk to people about how wind generated waves and tsunami waves are different, and why the wind waves do not travel as far as the tsunami waves. We also loved sharing a tent with QuakeCoRE who had a portable shake table. It was so much fun watching kids try to create the highest building that could support a simulated version of the next Wellington earthquake!

We hope to catch you at Polyfest next year! Until then, we have some other events up our sleeve.

Massey University invited us on stage to talk about our work and event sent us this pic. Thanks again for having us!
